Components of an Access Control System

Just as the name suggests, access control systems regulate the movement of individuals in and out of a secured perimeter, which can be either virtual or physical. Protected perimeters usually require authorized access into the area. The control system helps to effortlessly grant or deny access to individuals depending on whether they have authorized access or not. These systems are often used financial institutions, hospitals, research institutes and even the work place. Another reason for the use of access control is to monitor the movement of employees for accountability purposes. The system can create a log of all entries and exits into the perimeter within a period. The following are the basic components of access control systems.

Access Cards

Access cards are coded with individual data in order to monitor every time the card is used. Individuals can use the card as an electronic key to unlock the doors in secured perimeters. Sometimes, the access control device requires using bio data instead of an access card. Bio data includes finger print scans and hand prints among others.

Card Reader

The card reader is mounted on the door of the secured area. The device reads the access card to determine whether the individual can be granted access or not. The card readers are coded to allow only specific levels of access for different cardholders. Therefore, not every cardholder can get access to every door if they are not authorized to. This kind of system is particularly useful in areas where there are different levels of access for different individuals, for instance in hotel rooms, guests can only get access to their hotel room floor.

Keypad

Sometimes, access can be granted with a numeric code or password. A keypad can be installed instead of the card reader. The individual has to input the correct password in order to enter the secured area. Keypads and card readers can also be used together as added security measures since anyone can pick up another person's card and use it.

Electronic Lock and Server Computer

Electronic locks are used on doors that are controlled by these access control systems. All the electronic locks are wired to a server computer that controls all lock and unlock command. The server computer can be used to override the lock system in the various doors in case of emergency like fire. The server computer is the brain of the entire system and can control multiple doors with card readers. For more information, contact Shellharbour Security Systems Pty Ltd
